Closure of prince's theatre
Prince’s Theatre closes. Due to the decline in income because of the First World War, and increasing competition from the rise in cinematic entertainment. It was intended that a cinema would replace the theatre. The Second World War meant that the cinema was never built although the theatre was demolished. On the site now is a large office building, commonly known as Peter House.

bus station closure
Other than the temporary halt to expansion due to the declaration of war in 1930, the Bus station continued successfully through the 40s and 50s, however the widespread car ownership that came with the 1960s forced the bus station out of favour. [Station in 1967 shown above]. The formation of the National Bus Company in 1968 was the final nail in the coffin for the Lower Mosley Street Bus Station due to their severe cuts in services. The fate of the station was sealed and on 13th May 1973 it closed, being demolished later that year.
1974
Gaumont Cinema Closure
The Gaumont Cinema closes its doors for the last time due to economic struggles in the heart of Manchester. Showing the shift in cultures through this period, a nightclub was opened in the basement of the building, this was demolished in 1990 and today the site is home to a multi storey carpark.

tommy ducks demolished
Tommy Ducks is demolished. As council offices do not open on a Sunday, unfortunately the date of the preservation renewal fell on this date. The order could not be renewed until the Monday morning. Following this Tommy Ducks was demolished the cultural hub and icon of Manchester was no longer. Following the demolition, Greenalls were fined £150,000 for the destruction of the public house. The Tommy Ducks site is now occupied by a premier inn hotel that is evident of the shift in attitudes to move towards commercial and economic development for the area and city of Manchester.
